Everything I Never Told You

A interesting tale of a family's struggles and the weight of unspoken promises. Celeste Ng's brilliant debut explores identity and the bonds of family.

The Lee Family Secrets

When the favorite daughter of a mixed race family disappears, the weak bonds holding the Lees together begin to break. This story explores the divide between parents and children, the stress of expectations, and the struggle of being different.

The Lee Family

Lydia

The golden child struggling with the heavy pressure of her parents unfulfilled dreams while hiding her own world from them.

James

An American born Chinese professor struggling with a lifelong sense of exclusion and longing to finally belong somewhere.

Marilyn

A mother who dreamed of a career in science, now projecting her lost dreams onto her daughter with a lot of pressure.

"Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet" (Ng 1).

The favorite child feels so much pressure and the opening statement demonstrates how even if a family member has passed they still keep secrets, just a small issue from their family dynamic.

"Hannah knows nothing about that summer, of her mother's long-ago dissaperence. For as long as she's been alive, the family has never spoken of it" (Ng 102).

Throughout this entire section, it’s both confusing and intriguing to observe the dynamics of their family. If they possess information of significant importance, why wouldn’t they discuss it, especially considering its potential to have substantial impacts on them?

“Before that summer, Nath had been his mother’s favorite" (Ng 172).

This realization builds into the changing dynamics of the Lee family, reflecting on the favoritism and silent pressures that had shaped their lives before a significant point.

“Each time, for a moment, they would glimpse one another, almost see beneath the surface" (Ng 291).

The emotional disconnection among the family members in the novel is huge. Even though they live together living together they rarely engage in honest communication or fully comprehend each other’s perspectives.

Inside the Quiet Tragedy

Set in 1970s Ohio, Celeste Ng’s debut novel is an example of the ways we all fail to fully understand all of those closest to us. It focuses on a family forced to fill the gaps between their public lives and private truths, showing examples of cultural identity, gender roles, and the consequences of things left unsaid.
